Redefining Model’s Role In Society. Catalyzing Leadership In The Modeling Industry.
There’s no denying that we are currently undergoing an exponentially evolving transformation on planet earth. Everything is being brought to the surface to be examined to determine what is truly serving us and what is not as a collective. The status quo is revealing itself to be highly unsustainable and old paradigms are being shaken up in order to allow for our world to fall together in a new way that will pave the road for future generations. As a collective we are questioning outdated ways of thinking and being that only serve to create separation between people. We are all feeling the call to come together in our similarities to support one another rather than focus on what is different about us, whether that be race, gender or nationality. It’s become clear that if we continue to divide ourselves and not work together, we will only experience more chaos and fear. What we long for more than anything in all of our hearts is peace, harmony, connection and love. By bridging the gaps that have divided us we can create a world that works for everyone where everyone is included. Heaven on earth is possible and we all play such an integral role in this process.
What does this have to do with models in society? Models are highly visible players in the game of life. People worship beauty and idolize those who represent it. As models, we have the opportunity to make a difference in a way that not all others can. Everyone has equal opportunity to be a leader and catalyze transformation, and yet models that have been deemed and accepted by society as beautiful have been given the advantage to be more seen. People just want to look at beautiful people, not just look at but look up to. What true beauty is another conversation, for now, let us focus on the general concept of a fashion/commercial/print model and how we as models can use our gift of beauty and recognition to positively influence the world.
Given that the word model itself means “a system or thing used as an example to follow or imitate,” (Merriam Webster’s second definition) that would explain why people would seek to mold themselves after what they see us models represent. There’s nothing coincidental about this. Intelligent marketers have capitalized on culture’s obsession for beauty and used beautiful people to sell the products they want to sell. They know they can hook people’s attention and use models to sell not only a product, but an entire lifestyle and endless pursuit towards perfection. There’s nothing wrong with any of this, it’s just that what’s being represented isn’t real, it isn’t authentic. People are striving to mold themselves after a false ideal that will never be attained. They’re looking to role models that offer no values for how to live a life that is connected and whole. The focus is all on the external and if there’s anything we’ve learned it’s that happiness does not come from outside of us no matter how much we think that just one more pair of shoes, car or million dollars will solve all of our problems.
So what can we do about it? We become the role models society desperately needs. We embrace the mantle we’ve been given as “models” and use it for the good of all beings. We are uniquely placed in society in such a way that we can truly reach millions if not billions of people and inspire through reminding people true beauty comes from within and we are all beautiful in our own way. We can embody the change we wish to see in the world and everyone will be watching and perhaps we can all remember together who we really are. We are the ones we have been waiting for. No one is coming to save the world, that’s the good and the bad news. For the ones that we have been waiting to save us is ourselves. We have all the tools, wisdom and resources to create a paradise world if we just come together and support one another. We are far stronger together than apart.
Let us be the role models we wish we had growing up. Let us remember we were born for greatness and that we can do anything we want. We can flip the script and instead of just being a clothes hanger we can be a world megaphone reminding people of who they are: love. Let us rise in love and be the leaders we know ourselves to be deep in our hearts. People love us and love looking to us for who and how to be, let’s take that as a profound privilege and an opportunity to give back. They say true leadership isn’t about domination but rather about being able to really listen and hold space for people to discover their own truth. We don’t have to have all the answers. We just need the willingness, inspiration, and joy in our hearts in order to stand for what’s possible for humanity. Let us be role models for how humans can truly thrive when they are rooted in their truth, in their center, in their authentic self. And that truth will be different for each person, that’s the fun part. It’s not a one size fits all tyrannical doctrine, it’s a new way of being that is inclusive all life.
Where do we begin? The first step is always awareness, learning to be more mindful in every moment. The best place to start is where you are. Let’s get in tune with ourselves first and foremost and work our way out from there. From understanding our own minds and bodies we can then begin to explore how we interact with our environment and the people around us. The reason why we can’t just implement a whole series of sustainable solutions without this first step of awareness is because the consciousness of the collective would still be the same and it would end up right where it is now. Both the internal awareness and external structures must go hand in hand in order for successful transformation. How can we get people to care about polluting the rivers of the world with soda cans when we are polluting our bodies with soda pop? The external is always a reflection of the internal, and in the same way we can use this reflection to teach us about ourselves.
The key is to take it one step at a time. It can be helpful to remember it’s about the journey, not the destination. It’s about who we discover ourselves to be in the process. As we begin to get to know who we really are beyond the labels and identities we’ve accumulated throughout our life, we find true inner peace and happiness. We come to discover that we are already whole and complete and that nothing is wrong with us. As we come to know this as true for ourselves, then we can share it with others. We can only share what we have and the best way to teach is to be. Let us take this opportunity to remember who we are and embody our highest joy, love, and beauty. From this place just BEING is inspiring in itself. We don’t need to do, try, convince, sell, or prove anything to anyone. The truth speaks for itself and when people witness us living our joy they will want to know more and then we can share what has worked for us and encourage them to discover their own truth.
Let us be the lighthouses in these growing times of chaos. Let us shine our light so bright and share our gifts with the world. May our hearts be full and generous and may our presence be a blessing upon all whom we meet.
